CCTV internet speed calculator
Estimate upload speed for cloud recording and remote CCTV viewing, while keeping local NVR network traffic separate.
Estimate CCTV internet speed
Separate local camera-to-NVR traffic from internet bandwidth. Enter the actual average bitrates from your camera settings when possible.
What these numbers mean
Camera-to-NVR recording uses your local wired or Wi-Fi network; it does not normally use your internet plan. Ensure the cameras, PoE switch, and recorder can handle this LAN traffic.
Cloud recording uses upload continuously. Remote live viewing also uses upload at the camera site and download at the viewer. The estimate adds your selected headroom, then rounds the suggested plan up to a 5 Mbps step.
Planning estimate only. Actual bitrate varies with camera settings, motion, lighting, audio, codec, and vendor overhead. Internet providers may advertise download rather than upload speed; check the actual upload rate and leave capacity for other household or business use.
CCTV internet speed questions
Do IP cameras need internet to record to an NVR?
When cameras and the NVR are on the same site, recording usually uses the local network and can continue without internet access. Remote viewing, cloud recording, and external video services need an internet connection.
How much upload speed does cloud CCTV need?
Add the configured bitrates of cameras uploading continuously to the cloud, then include simultaneous remote-viewing streams and a practical capacity reserve. Use measured or manufacturer-specified bitrates where possible because actual video traffic varies.
Why does remote CCTV viewing use upload and download?
The camera site sends the video stream, so it uses upload capacity there. The phone or computer receiving the stream uses download capacity at the viewing location. Count the streams likely to be watched at the same time.
